Greetings again!

Your News Notes staff somehow managed to misplace the following two additional announcements:

  • 5th Grade Social Planning Meeting
  • Earth Week is Here!

  • 5th Grade Social Planning Meeting

It's time to start planning for the 5th grade social! We raised a good chunk of money at the Family Dance last week. . . The ball is rolling!

The 5th grade social takes place on the last day of school and it's our children's "graduation" moment. We have some visions, but we'd love some input!

Please join us Wednesday, April 29th at 7:00pm to put in your two cents!

We'll be meeting at Amy Hollands' house, located at 3304 NE 26th Avenue. (The corner of 26th and Klickitat). If you have any questions or ideas, please e- mail Amy at: madjoy22@comcast.net.

    Earth Week is Here!

The Alameda Green Team hopes you and your students are having fun filling out the Earth Week Challenge Logs this week and making small changes in your habits. If we continue to practice these changes after this week, they will become automatic and easy.

The Green Team would also like to remind you to continue tracking your carbon footprint reducing activities by filling out your Earth Week Challenge Log. Don't forget to turn them in Friday morning to your teachers. The Green Team will pick them up and all participants in the Earth Week Challenge Log will be entered in a random drawing for lots of great prizes! The Green Team will estimate the amount of carbon emissions saved by the cumulative efforts of Alameda families. The results will be posted to News Notes the following week.

The sale of waste free lunch items is continuing through Thursday afternoon. Be sure to buy your sandwich wraps, waste free lunch boxes and stainless steel water bottles to use every time you pack a lunch!

Friday is Alameda's first Waste Free Lunch Day! Let's see if we can reduce the number of garbage bags that leave the cafeteria from 12 bags to 6! Can you help us cut the amount of garbage in half?

How do you create a waste free lunch?

    • Pack a lunch using non-disposable containers.
    • Pack a cloth napkin, silverware and a drink bottle.
    • Pack items that are not prepackaged or individually wrapped.
    • If you get milk in the cafeteria, bring your milk carton home to rinse and recycle.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Wow! There is a lot of recycling going on! The bins in the hallway are overflowing but we will continue to accept the following items through Friday:

    • Batteries: Bring your dead alkaline, lithium and/or rechargeable batteries and place in the appropriate bins.
    • Tennis shoes: Don't know what to do with that old pair of gym shoes? Bring used shoes you don't want anymore - shoes missing matches or in really bad shape will be ground up for sports/playground surfaces. Shoes that are in decent shape will find a new home with a person unable to buy shoes for themselves.
    • Eyeglasses: If you wear glasses or contacts, you have a few pairs of eyeglasses with an old prescription in them lying around the house. Bring them in and we'll take them to the Lions Club at the end of the week. The Lions Club spiffs them up and donates them to people in need all around the world.
    • Block Styrofoam: Bring in your block Styrofoam (no deli, packing peanuts, meat trays or takeaway containers - only the rigid stuff).

The Alameda Green Team welcomes comments, suggestions or questions. Please email greenteam@alameda.org
